In-house, agency, or freelancer: who should do restaurant marketing?
Choose in-house when the work lives on the floor and the calendar. Choose a freelancer when you need one skill and can cover the weeks they are out. Choose a restaurant marketing agency when you need a named team on search or events, and you will judge them on reservations, direction requests, or sent inquiries.

How does a restaurant marketing agency compare with in-house?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a May 2025 median wage of $166,790 for marketing managers and $133,660 for advertising and promotions managers. Half earned more, and half earned less. The figures are national, not a restaurant wage, and they leave out benefits, tools, and any media investment. A freelancer invoice and an agency fee are separate lines.
Three ways to cover the work
In-houseOn the floor, owns the calendar, one payroll
FreelancerOne skill, one person, no built-in backup
Agency partnerA lead and a backup on a named channel
BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025. Wage only.
An in-house lead fits when the floor cannot wait. Restaurant marketing agency vs in-house is then a support question. The lead keeps the plan. The partner runs the channel the lead will not open every week. Fees are in what a restaurant marketing agency costs.
How does a restaurant marketing agency compare with a freelancer?
A freelancer can shoot, write, or build one page. Ask who answers when they are out, and who else can open the ad account. One name is a freelancer, even if the signature says agency. A partner should name the lead, the daily changes, and the backup. That test is in the vetting guide.
Toast's 2025 survey put word of mouth at 38 percent and walking or driving past at 30 percent. Map apps were 18 percent and search was 16 percent. The room and the regulars are a different job from the listing. The channel list is in the services guide.
Is a restaurant marketing agency worth it?
It is worth it when the missing job is weekly and the report can count reservations, direction requests, or a sent inquiry. A new name, a new mark, or a person on the floor is a different fit. See the branding guide and the partner-selection guide. If admin access is missing, read leaving your restaurant marketing agency first.
A partner is worth a conversation when
The open job is search, Maps, or private-event inquiries
Someone in-house will approve the work and read the report
The restaurant stays admin on every account
The report names a reservation, a direction request, or a sent inquiry
If the need is a new identity, start with a brand partner instead.
Is a restaurant marketing agency worth it if we already have a manager?
It is worth a look when the open job is weekly search or a private-event path your manager will not run. It is a poor fit when you need a person on the floor or a new identity. Ask who does the missing job, and what the report will count.
How is a restaurant marketing agency different from a freelancer?
A freelancer is one person and one skill. An agency partner should name a lead, a backup, and the jobs each one does. Ask what happens on the week that person is out. A single login with no backup is a freelancer arrangement, whatever the invoice says.
Does the BLS wage tell us what an in-house marketer costs?
The May 2025 medians are national wages for marketing managers and advertising managers. They are not restaurant wages. They leave out benefits, tools, and the media investment. Use them as context, then price the role you would actually post.
Can we keep an in-house lead and add a partner?
Yes, when the lead keeps the calendar, the floor, and the approvals, and the partner runs a named channel. Write that split down. The restaurant should stay admin on the accounts either way, so a change of partner does not take the history with it.
Toast, how guests discover new restaurants. Word of mouth 38 percent, walking or driving past 30, map apps 18, search 16. The article says 1,466 adults. A note on the same page says 1,446. Fielded October 9 to 15, 2025.
What should we look at first?
Bring the jobs your team already does and the one nobody owns. If you want to partner with us, request an introduction. We can say if that job is ours.
